"All over the world this Gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth." Colossians 1:6

Farragut Family Summer Service Project
Aug. 6th

In June, Farragut Family Summer Service focused on painting and landscape work at the church (within our walls). In July, the Family Service reached out into our community as water was distributed to those at the Farragut Fourth of July parade. In August, the focus is beyond our community. The Missions Ministry is sponsoring the Farragut Family Summer Service in August. The ministry has chosen two different areas of outreach.

The first is serving the Christian Church Foundation for the Handicapped at their Riverwood facility in Louisville, TN. This Service Saturday also gives us the opportunity to work with the Prom of the Stars, another outreach ministry of our church. The Prom of the Stars committee is having a fund raising pancake breakfast on Saturday, August 6th, from 8:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. The residents of Riverwood and the Independent Living Program have been eager participants in the Prom of the Stars from its inception. Rhonna Sanford, Director of Services, and possibly all the residents will be attending the breakfast in support of the Prom of the Stars. After eating we will go to Riverwood to help with various needs: yard work, cleaning and some indoor painting. They will supply all the materials; we need to supply the service. Bring your appetite and help support a very important and worthwhile mission of FCC.

Our second outreach is a little less strenuous. As you know, Farragut Christian Church now maintains a college scholarship fund for students from FCC studying for a degree in Christian service. Although not every college student from FCC will benefit from scholarships, we can support each of the college students with a “care package” as they leave for classes this fall. We will be collecting items for the care packages on Sunday, August 7th and again on Sunday, August 14th. The gifts will then be packaged and given to our students before they leave for college. Suggested items for the packages are “plug-in” air fresheners, Clorox wipes, plastic silverware (Wal-Mart has very inexpensive colorful utensils), snack foods, Kleenex, pens, toiletries, battery operated closet lights or Wal-Mart or Target gift cards.

We look forward to serving with you.

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased." Hebrews 13:16

Family Groups to Kick Off on August 7

If you would ask me, “What is the best way to get connected to a group of people in our church?”, my immediate answer would be “Family Groups.” It is a way to find a group that will be there to help you when you are in need and to be part of a group that will depend on you when another member is in need. This is why our Family Groups are so important. I have been to visit several people in the hospital and have been surrounded by that person’s family group. If you are looking for this type of connection, you can find it in a family group. We have five Family Groups that are meeting this fall. They are listed below. On August 7th, each family group will decide what they will be studying for the fall. I encourage you to come to one of the groups and give your input to the group.

EXPECTATION TO ENVISION

Where do you envision our church going? It is an important question. If, as a church, we are moving in a different direction or have no direction, we will minimize the impact we can have for Christ. Our theme this year is “Great Expectations” and we expect God to continue to move our church. If you have wondered where we are heading, I encourage you to be at church for this month’s sermon series. We will review our mission, “A Family of God reaching the world for Christ with Grace and Truth.” We will check our progress as a church this year to make sure we are making an impact in the community.

Women's Fellowship

Back To School Project

In conjunction with the C.A.R.E. Food Pantry, the Women’s Fellowship is sponsoring a "Back-to-School Project" this year. The ladies have set a goal to fill 25 backpacks for all elementary age children served by the C.A.R.E. Food Pantry to help them get off to a great start this new school year.

Come at 7:00pm on August 9th. Help fill the backpacks, enjoy the fellowship and there will be dessert and coffee, too!

ITEMS NEEDED: backpacks (no logos or wheels), crayons, pencils, wide-ruled notebook paper, scissors, rulers, glue, glue sticks, individual Kleenex packs, water bottles

Sign up in the foyer indicating how many and what items you will donate

TOP TEN LIST

Our major goal for the church this year is to have 100 people give 52 hours of service. This means we need you to serve the church and our community an average of one hour per week. We have 60+ people on track to accomplish this goal, but we need more people to decide where they can serve to meet this goal. We have created a “Top Ten List” to help you realize where your service is needed. This list is kept current to show you where you can volunteer. Let me just mention a couple areas that are on this list. You all have heard me discuss in my sermons that one big reason a visitor doesn’t return is how the building is kept up. One item on the list is changing light bulbs. Giving an hour of your time each week to come and change light bulbs is a great way to serve. Another item on this list is working in the yard. We pay someone to mow the lawn, but we can always use people to pull weeds and keep our grounds looking beautiful. If you can volunteer an hour of your week to pull some weeds, you would be making our church more inviting and serving at the same time. Look over the current list and see if you can serve in any of these areas.

There will be a meeting on July 10th following "Hot Summer Nights" for all those interested in this year's prom and to set up the various committees needed to make this event an even greater success than in previous years. Contact Jim Riner or the church office for more information or check out our website: www.promofthestars.com

Library News

Thank you to Sandy Bumbalough for her review of “Monster” in last month’s newsletter. It really made me want to add that to my list of must-reads. I also had a recommendation from my sister and brother-in-law; they said that “”Flabbergasted” by Ray Blackston was the funniest book they had read in a long time. I would love to have a review of the books that any of you have read.

For the month of August, one author and one subject will be highlighted in the library. These books will be made easily available for you to check out or just sit in the library to peruse.

The author for August is Terri Blackstock. The library has two complete series by this author and a partial series:

The Sun Coast Chronicles
#1 Evidence of Mercy
#2 Southern Storm #3 Ulterior Motives
#4 Presumption of Guilt

Cape Refuge
#1 Cape Refuge
#2 Southern Storm
#3 River's Edge
#4 Breaker’s Reef

Newpointe 911
#1 Private Justice
#2 Shadow of Doubt

The subject for August is "dating":

Boundaries in Dating by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend
Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot
I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris
Living With Your Passions by Erwin Lutzer
Choices by Stacy & Paula Rinehart

If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out our library lately, I would encourage you to come see these showcased books, the new books and maybe check out some old ones. Remember, the church receives 10% of Cedar Springs Bookstore receipts in free books for our library. Please bring in any of your receipts so I can shop for new books for our summer reading program and your summer pleasure.
