Smoky Mountain Christian Men's Fellowship
Knoxville, TN

The Smoky Mountain Christian Men's Fellowship grew out of a meeting in October, 1949 of men from several Christian Church congregations in the Knoxville area.  They met at the Fountain City Christian Church and discussed the possibility of continuing fellowship meetings for men from the area churches on a regular basis.  A second meeting was held at the Forest Avenue Christian Church on February 6, 1950 with 65 men in attendance.  They elected temporary leaders and laid plans for the group which was then called the East Tennessee Christian Men's Fellowship.  This name was later changed to Smoky Mountain Christian Men's Fellowship and the purpose expanded. The purpose of the fellowship is "primarily to plant New Testament, non-denominational Christian churches, which are independent. We also seek to promote fellowship which fosters a kingdom mentality, to provide physical, financial or advisory assistance to existing congregations and to assist in the preparation of church planters".

In l962 the Fellowship gave $5,200 for land for the Farragut Church and also helped to supplement the minister's salary for a time. In March, 1998 a new church was started in the Powell area, the Lighthouse Christian Church.  This is the first church planting using a great deal of advance advertising and a “contemporary” worship format.  The church currently meets at the Powell High School, but has established a committee and fund to purchase land. This year, Lighthouse Christian Church is self-supporting and averages over 150 in attendance. Mike Decker has succeeded Carlos Fields as evangelist for the fellowship.
